Overview of This Issue
Welcome to issue 8 of Pitch Black magazine!
We're always so excited to showcase and spotlight some of our finest and brightest talent here in the UK. The great thing is we never have to look very hard or very far as our community is bursting with people to celebrate & cheer on!
One of these people is 'Just a Black girl from Hackney' who is innovatively changing the publishing scene by telling our diverse stories. We absolutely loved meeting Valerie Brandes and hearing her engaging story of traversing the Atlantic between the UK & the USA. Make sure you read & watch the cover story interview to hear all about it.
As always we're excited and delighted to bring you this issue and certainly hope you love it, enjoy it & share it!

She has a passion for telling Black British stories and other diverse stories. Her commitment has led her from the UK to the USA and back and ultimately led her to set up Jacaranda Books resulting in awards, accolades and associations.
One of those awards was as a result of an innovative campaign; Twenty in 2020, where she set out to publish 20 Black authors in 2020, a feat that has never been done before or since. The result was being named, Small Press of the Year at the British Book Awards in that year.
